Government Establishes Big Data Institute to Harness Data for Advancements

In a significant move towards utilizing big data for economic and social progress, the government has announced the establishment of the Big Data Institute (BDI). This new public agency aims to effectively manage the massive volume of data generated by both the public and state agencies, while shaping future policies.

Set to become operational within 180 days, the BDI will replace the existing Government Big Data Institute (GBDi) inaugurated in May 2019. As Thailand’s pioneering public agency dedicated to leveraging big data for the benefit of society, the BDI will cater to diverse sectors seeking data-driven solutions to address challenges, boost productivity, and formulate economic policies.

One of the institute’s key responsibilities will be providing big data analysis services and supporting innovative projects in adherence to international standards. Additionally, the BDI aims to foster the growth of the data analysis industry and contribute to the professional training of individuals in the field of big data.

As outlined in the Royal Gazette, the BDI will hold the authority to oversee the development of big data in alignment with existing laws and government directives. Collaboration with the public sector will be sought to ensure necessary cooperation and support.

The Digital Economy Promotion Agency (Depa), operating under the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES), has been actively championing the utilization of big data for national progress, even during the tenure of the GBDi. The previous institute successfully streamlined over 100 projects from 67 state agencies and played a pivotal role in the development of platforms like Health Link, Travel Link, Youth Link, and CO-Link.

With the establishment of the Big Data Institute, the government aims to capitalize on the immense potential of big data, driving advancements in various sectors and shaping a data-driven future for Thailand.
