Thaksin Outlines Economic Vision for Thailand’s Recovery

At the “Vision for Thailand 2024” event, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra presented his economic vision for Thailand, addressing a wide-ranging audience of ministers, business leaders, and executives. The event drew attention as Thaksin discussed his approach to reviving the country’s economy amid various ongoing challenges.

In his speech, Thaksin emphasized the urgent need to rebuild confidence in Thailand’s economy, which he described as being in a fragile state. He highlighted key issues, including rising debt levels, youth drug addiction, and the high cost of living, which he argued have contributed to economic instability. Thaksin underscored the necessity for decisive leadership to confront these challenges, calling for Thai businesses to strengthen their competitiveness on the global stage. He also criticized the current lack of a comprehensive strategy to address the nation’s problems, suggesting that more focused efforts are needed.

A notable point in Thaksin’s address was his discussion of the digital wallet stipend project, a controversial proposal aimed at boosting the economy through blockchain technology. While acknowledging the opposition to the plan, he argued that its benefits could be far-reaching if properly implemented. Thaksin proposed an allocation of an additional 145 billion baht to fund the project, with an initial distribution of a 10,000-baht stipend to 14.5 million vulnerable individuals planned for September 2024 as a preliminary economic stimulus.

Thaksin concluded his remarks by reiterating the importance of effective leadership in addressing Thailand’s economic issues, particularly in the areas of household and business debt restructuring. He suggested that the government could consider issuing bonds to retail investors as a means to raise funds in the future, highlighting the need for precise, targeted economic measures to stabilize and grow the economy.

It was reported that Thaksin received a warm welcome from several prominent figures in the business community, including Dhanin Chearavanont, Keeree Kanjanapas, Sarath Ratanavadi, and Komol Jungrungreangkit, who were present at the event to hear his proposals.
