Authorities Investigate Fatal Pak Chong Tunnel Collapse

Authorities have initiated a thorough investigation into the collapse of a rail tunnel in Pak Chong district, Nakhon Ratchasima, which resulted in the tragic deaths of three workers. The incident occurred on the night of August 27, following a period of prolonged heavy rain. The investigation, spearheaded by Pak Chong police, aims to uncover whether the construction adhered to the necessary design, regulations, and safety standards.

The collapse took place approximately 1.5 kilometers from the tunnel’s entrance, trapping two Chinese nationals and one Myanmar worker inside. Rescue operations, challenged by the ongoing rail construction and adverse conditions, succeeded in recovering the bodies after two days of effort.

The investigative team plans to interview workers, contractors, and representatives from key engineering bodies, including the Council of Engineers and the Engineering Institute of Thailand. Additionally, the probe will consider findings from the State Railway of Thailand’s own inquiry into the incident.

In light of the tragedy, construction of the tunnel has been temporarily suspended. Engineers and contractors are currently deliberating on the necessary safety measures that must be implemented before work can resume. Experts have underscored the importance of thoroughly assessing soil and rock conditions in such complex projects, particularly when employing techniques like “drill and blast.” While this method is known for its cost-effectiveness, it requires rigorous safety protocols to prevent accidents of this nature.

Attending the scene were several officials and representatives from various agencies, all of whom have committed to ensuring that the investigation is comprehensive and that any necessary changes to construction practices are enforced to prevent future tragedies.
