TAT Highlights Efforts to Promote Sustainable Tourism Across Thailand

On December 3, 2024, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recognized ten local administrative organizations for their adherence to the Sustainable Tourism Management Standard (STMS). The ceremony, held at the Chalatat Grand Room of The Bed Vacation Hotel in Songkhla Province, aimed to showcase sustainable tourism practices and encourage expansion to other tourism organizations nationwide.

The ten organizations certified under the STMS for fiscal year 2024 include municipalities and subdistrict administrative organizations from provinces such as Chiang Rai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla. These groups demonstrated compliance with sustainable tourism criteria, focusing on environmental preservation, community involvement, and long-term planning.

TAT Director Dr. Atikun Kongmee emphasized the crucial role of local administrative organizations in achieving sustainable tourism. By implementing STMS standards, these organizations act as the foundation for developing environmentally responsible and community-focused tourist destinations. Dr. Kongmee noted that their efforts could pave the way for international recognition, such as inclusion in the Green Destinations Top100 list, which highlights the world’s most sustainable tourism sites.

Looking ahead, TAT plans to support sustainable tourism development further by providing training for local executives and tourism operators. This initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of local organizations, ensuring sustainable practices are embedded in policy and operations.

In attendance at the event were various officials, including municipal representatives and members of TAT’s leadership team, reflecting the collaborative efforts necessary to uphold sustainable tourism across Thailand.
