Thailand’s export sector reached a historic milestone in 2024, recording a total export value of 300.5 billion US dollars (10.5 trillion baht). This marks a 5.4% increase compared to the previous year, with December exports alone rising 8.7%, maintaining six consecutive months of growth. Major contributors to this performance include established markets such as the United States, China, Japan, and the European Union, along with significant expansion in emerging regions like South Asia, the Middle East, and Russia.
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Commerce projects export growth of 2-3% for 2025. Officials cite global economic stability, controlled inflation, and the relocation of production bases to ASEAN countries, including Thailand, as key drivers. Efforts to promote Thai culture under the government’s Soft Power initiatives are expected to further enhance the country’s appeal in global markets. However, challenges persist, particularly regarding geopolitical tensions, exchange rate volatility, and trade policy uncertainties in key economies such as the United States. The ministry is actively addressing these issues through diplomatic and economic engagements.
Commerce Minister Phichai Naripthaphan is set to visit the United States in February to discuss trade policies, including possible adjustments to tariffs on Thai exports. His trip is part of broader government efforts to expand market access and strengthen trade partnerships, which are crucial for sustaining Thailand’s export momentum in the coming year.
In addition to its trade performance, Thailand is preparing for a surge in tourism during the Lunar New Year period. Between January 24 and February 2, Airports of Thailand (AOT) anticipates handling over 4 million travelers across more than 24,500 flights. This includes approximately 700,000 Chinese visitors, representing a 22.6% increase from the previous year.
To manage the expected influx, AOT has deployed additional staff at immigration counters and security checkpoints, ensuring efficient passenger flow. Enhanced safety measures, including inspections for bird and wildlife hazards, have been implemented to align with international standards. Travelers are advised to arrive early during peak times to minimize delays. A 24-hour contact center has been established to assist passengers throughout the holiday period.
