Chinese Delegation in Thailand to Tackle Golden Triangle Crime

A high-ranking Chinese delegation, led by Vice Public Security Minister Liu Zongyi, visited Thailand’s northern Chiang Rai province on February 1, 2025, to assess crime suppression efforts in the Golden Triangle. The group toured the special economic zone in Ton Pheung, Laos, an area linked to illicit activities, including drug trafficking and online scams.

Established in 2007 by the Laotian government and the Chinese-owned Kings Romans Group, the Golden Triangle special economic zone has gained notoriety for being a hub of illegal operations, such as human and wildlife trafficking. The Chinese officials met with Thai immigration, police, and security representatives to discuss transnational crime, particularly focusing on human trafficking and fraud schemes.

As part of their visit, the delegation traveled to Mae Sot district in Tak province on Wednesday to inspect immigration controls at the Myanmar border. They raised concerns about call centers in Myanmar that allegedly defraud Chinese citizens and proposed cutting electricity to suspected hubs along the border. The delegation also recommended stronger cooperation between Thailand and China, suggesting a joint operations center in Thailand to combat these criminal networks and facilitate the rescue of Chinese nationals reportedly held against their will.

Senior Thai police officers, including Pol Lt-Gen Trairong Phiwpan, commissioner of the Cybercrime Investigation Bureau, attended the discussions.
