Khlong Naka Wildlife Sanctuary Develops Eco-Tourism Trail in Ranong

Between June 27 and June 29, 2025, Thailand’s Khlong Naka Wildlife Sanctuary in Ranong Province began developing a new eco-tourism trail as part of an initiative to promote sustainable domestic travel while preserving biodiversity. The effort supports a broader national policy encouraging conservation-friendly tourism, as outlined by Natural Resources and Environment Minister Dr. Chalermchai Sri-on.

The Khlong Naka Wildlife Sanctuary, under the Protected Areas Regional Office 4 (Surat Thani), is pushing forward with the development of a conservation-focused tourism trail in alignment with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s policy to expand domestic travel options without compromising natural ecosystems.

Sarawut Phalayasut, Chief of Khlong Naka Wildlife Sanctuary, led the field team in surveying the proposed trail and designated camping site near the Saithong La-ong-dao Waterfall. The aim is to ensure the trail is both environmentally sustainable and safe for future visitors. “Domestic tourism reduces greenhouse gas emissions associated with international travel and supports local economies while preserving cultural and ecological integrity,” he noted.

The Saithong La-ong-dao Waterfall, hidden deep within the sanctuary’s lush forest, is renowned for its cascading water that creates a misty rainbow effect when sunlight filters through. The journey to the waterfall is a true nature expedition, beginning with an 8-kilometer trek through mountainous rainforest terrain. Visitors encounter diverse ecosystems and must cross 12 streams, with some stretches requiring riverside hiking.

Due to the slippery terrain in the first section, appropriate gear such as non-slip hiking shoes—preferably Thai “Stud Doipha” rubber shoes—is recommended. From the campsite, hikers face a further 2-kilometer ascent to the waterfall, requiring 1 to 2 hours to complete. This section is the most physically demanding, with steep slopes and some rope-assisted climbs. Gloves and a flashlight are advised for safety.

This trail development project demonstrates a government-led effort to balance environmental conservation with local economic stimulation. It aims to offer adventurous travelers the opportunity to experience Thailand’s rich biodiversity while safeguarding fragile ecosystems.

Tourists interested in participating in the nature study trail are encouraged to prepare physically and equip themselves appropriately. The Khlong Naka Wildlife Sanctuary remains committed to offering immersive, sustainable tourism experiences that educate and inspire.

Officials from the Protected Areas Regional Office 4 (Surat Thani) and staff from Khlong Naka Wildlife Sanctuary continue to oversee the project, ensuring it meets ecological protection standards while enhancing tourism potential in Ranong Province.
