BMA seeks expertise from NESDB to tackle Bangkok flooding

The Governor of Bangkok, Mr. Chatchat Sitthiphan, met with his team of various BMA officials and Dr. Royle Chitdon, chairman and executive director of the Water Resources Informatics Institute (NESDB). They examined the display “From the Sky to the Mountains to the Sea” together. They also talked about a very efficient computer system for protecting resources and climate data.

The authorities discussed past flooding analyses as well as the NESDB operational areas in Bangkok and nearby areas. When discussing how to collaborate, it was stated that “hydrogence,” or an urban flood control platform, was required. It was also said that cities such as Thung Song Municipality in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province had updated their water infrastructure which served as a good example.

Dr. Royle and Dr. Suthat Weesakul, the Institute’s Director, discussed the major themes of the conversation in a media interview. These included how the BMA may use the Institute’s information, whether a prototype project might be done together, and how they can plan to repair water problems in the country’s center region before further rain arrives from the north in September.

The BMA team had the opportunity to observe the process of constructing a clear water system in the canal. It’s a simple idea: line the canal’s bottom with broken bricks. Most canals in Bangkok have concrete walls, but if the canal is dredged to make the water clear, the wall will collapse. However, utilizing broken bricks can help and is more appropriate for Bangkok.

Furthermore, rearing fish can aid in the cleaning of canals. The Department of Fisheries also assisted in testing the release of fish, and it was discovered that the weeds could be greatly reduced. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration wishes to test such a method in further detail.

According to Mr. Chatchat, Dr. Roy is considered as one of Thailand’s top water experts. And the NESDB has information from over 50 agencies, data being one of them. If it can be utilized to forecast rainfall and floods, we will be better prepared to deal with water challenges. It has experts, including the NESDB. and effective collaboration with other departments

All of this information will aid us in understanding various concepts similar to those found in Bangkok. If you wish to construct a stronger canal system in the future, for example, you may collaborate on a project to enhance the amount of water in the canals.

The tunnel is quite efficient, but it is very expensive and takes a long time to build. To repair the canals in the Bangkok area, which is more than 2,000 kilometers long, pipes are embedded or an expressway is built beneath the canal. It is expected to observe fast changes in a short amount of time, determining the next direction to pursue collectively.

Dr. Roy has advocated decentralizing the area because it is projected to receive more rainfall in the future. Dividing the canal into care zones will make it more efficient and will allow the NESDB office to use its considerable human, data, and computational resources to assure its success. The citizens will profit from the two agencies’ collaboration.

Because of Bangkok’s high temperatures, there are structures that absorb heat, causing the wind to slow down. The rain began to fall quickly, but when it approached the Bangkok area, it slowed. As a result, cooling the city is the solution. The idea is to plant trees and expand green spaces, including burying the communication wire to allow the trees to cast more shade and cool the city. Reduce the size of rain and dust It’s a great idea. “This is consistent with Bangkok policy and would help the people,” stated Governor Chatchart.

Dr. Suthat, on the other hand, stated that the NESDB is in charge of supervising the national water data warehouse. As all of the information gathered from the records was obtained with taxpayer money, 52 agencies are assisting in providing information and bringing advantages to both Bangkok and the country. The system may have been slow in the past. However, it is now speedier because it is linked to an automated system. and has the ability to transform Bangkok
