The fabled naga snake has been designated as the national symbol of Thailand after a proposal put forward by the National Culture Commission was granted approval by the Cabinet.
The statement was made by Government Spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek, who added the commission has also entrusted the Fine Arts Department with drawing up prototype images of naga. The announcement was made by Ratchada Thanadirek.
The naga, which originates in Indian mythology and frequently symbolizes water and abundance, has been a mainstay image in Thai cultural traditions, notably in relation to ancient rulers and Buddhism. Although the naga comes from India, it has been widely used in Thailand.
In Thai culture, there are four distinct kinds of naga: the golden naga, the green naga, the rainbow naga, and the black naga. The black naga is the most powerful of the four.
The naga is now considered an official symbol of the Kingdom of Thailand, joining the elephant, which is Thailand’s national animal.
