Thailand has officially said that it will back Timor Leste’s application to join ASEAN as the bloc’s 11th member.

Anucha Burapachaisri, the acting government spokesperson, made the statement, noting that Prime Minister Prayut Gen Chan-O-Cha was happy to help make it possible for Timor-Leste to join ASEAN as the organization’s 11th member.

On November 11, ASEAN heads of state reached an agreement in principle to accept East Timor, better known as Timor-Leste, as the organization’s newest member.

This would allow the country to send representatives to the ASEAN meetings and summit plenaries.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) conference this year came to a close on Sunday (November 13) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

An objective, criteria-based pathway for Timor-admission Leste’s is about to be finalized, the spokesman said, and all 10 ASEAN member nations and partners are prepared to offer any assistance that may be necessary.
