UNESCO Announces Asia-Pacific Heritage Conservation Awards Winners

This year’s UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation went to India for the courageous restoration of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya Museum, which is part of the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai World Heritage Site.

This year’s Awards program featured 13 projects from six countries: Afghanistan, China, India, Iran, Nepal, and Thailand. A total of 50 submissions from 11 countries in the Asia-Pacific area were examined by the jury in November 2022.

The Neilson Hays Library in Bangkok, Thailand, was honored with an Award of Distinction.

“The Awards are able to offer people a sense of pride and sense of ownership of their own history,” said Feng Jing, Chief of Culture Unit at UNESCO Bangkok. This year, he said, “historic infrastructure systems that are highly consistent with a sustainable development approach to our cities and rural regions” have received more attention than in previous years.

The UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation program has been honoring people and groups in the area since 2000 for their work in preserving, repairing, and repurposing historic buildings and sites.
