On February 10, a new record for the number of rail passengers in and around Bangkok was reached, with 1,577,330 passengers reported in total.
Pichet Kunadhamraks, Director-General of the Department of Rail Transport, ascribed the significant rise in passenger numbers to the Kaset Fair, which concluded on Saturday at Kasetsart University (11 Feb). On February 3-10, the number of passengers utilizing the Kasetsart University and Bang Khen stations was 676,571 and 19,957, respectively.
The agency estimates that 1.46 million people would use rail services on Songkran Day in April 2022. The BTS skytrain service saw a record-breaking 1.13 million passengers on December 12, 2019.
Pichet stated that the new record for rail passengers in Bangkok demonstrates the increasing popularity of trains as a form of transportation among Bangkok residents, as it provides a simple and effective solution to the city’s traffic congestion problem.
