Mitsubishi Power Launches Natural Gas Turbine at Rayong Power Plant Project in Thailand

Mitsubishi Power, a subsidiary of the Japanese industrial giant Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, announced on March 31 that it has begun operations of a natural gas turbine at a gas-fired power plant project in Thailand’s Rayong province. This latest turbine is the fifth of its kind to be delivered under a full turnkey 5,300-megawatt contract that Mitsubishi Power secured back in 2018.

The gas turbine units will be utilized at the gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) thermal power generation plant, which is located in both Rayong and Chonburi provinces. The Rayong plant is owned and operated by Gulf PD Company Ltd, a joint venture project between Mitsui & Co Ltd and Gulf Energy Development PCL, one of Thailand’s largest independent power producers.

The Rayong plant will be instrumental in addressing the rising demand for electricity in Thailand, and the electricity generated at the plant will be sold to the state-owned Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) under a long-term contract that spans 25 years. This will not only contribute to a more stable power supply, but it will also help to mitigate the negative impact on the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

This project is a reflection of Mitsubishi Power’s commitment to providing sustainable energy solutions to meet the growing demand for electricity in Southeast Asia. The company aims to use its cutting-edge technologies to create innovative and eco-friendly power generation systems that will help countries like Thailand to achieve their carbon neutrality goals.
