In the wake of a tragic incident at Siam Paragon, a renowned shopping hub in downtown Bangkok, where a shooting claimed the lives of two individuals and left five others injured, the Thai government is steadfastly focused on ensuring safety and reestablishing confidence within the tourism sector. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin emphasized the gravity of the situation, vowing to implement preventive measures to avert such harrowing incidents in the future. The government plans to introduce an alert system to swiftly notify the public during emergency situations.
During a press conference, Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol underscored the government’s commitment to rebuilding trust among tourists. To bolster security, law enforcement authorities are urging shopping malls and public spaces to enforce stricter security screening and provide comprehensive training for security personnel. Samran Nualma, Assistant Commissioner-General of the Thai Police, affirmed this directive during a news conference.
The alleged gunman faces serious charges, including premeditated murder, attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, carrying a weapon illegally, and discharging shots in a public space, according to Nakharin Sukhonthawit, commander of Metropolitan Police Division 6.
Meanwhile, preliminary investigations suggest the assailant may suffer from schizophrenia and was not undergoing appropriate medical treatment, as revealed by Police Chief Pol Gen Torsak Sukvimol. A thorough mental examination is slated, and the suspect is likely to be transferred to a psychiatric hospital for further evaluation before further interrogations.
At present, two fatalities have been confirmed: a Chinese woman and a Burmese woman. Additionally, five individuals remain hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the incident, with their identities withheld from public disclosure. In response, Siam Paragon, the venue of the incident, extended heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families. The organization has pledged support for the affected parties and assured to extend necessary care and assistance during their recovery.
