Anti-Myanmar Forces Seek Aid as Refugees Flee to Thailand

The National Unity Government (NUG) of anti-Myanmar junta forces has issued a plea for humanitarian aid to assist Myanmar nationals fleeing the escalating civil conflict, seeking refuge in Thailand. The appeal, conveyed through a statement from the resistance’s Foreign Ministry, underscores the dire situation in Myanmar, attributing it to the military’s relentless assaults on civilian targets. The NUG, alongside ethnic allies and related groups, pledges collaboration with the Thai government and relevant entities to provide essential support to displaced individuals.

According to the statement, the Myanmar military’s intensified attacks, including artillery shelling and airstrikes in Myawaddy township, have propelled thousands of civilians across the border into Thailand’s Mae Sot district and neighboring areas. As the conflict persists, the influx of displaced persons into Thailand is anticipated to surge in the coming days, further straining resources and necessitating urgent humanitarian intervention.

Expressing gratitude for the assistance extended by the Thai government, military, and authorities in Tak province, the NUG highlights Thailand’s role as a compassionate neighbor. The statement underscores the significance of this support and solidarity in the eyes of the Burmese populace, emphasizing the enduring impact of Thailand’s humanitarian gesture.

Meanwhile, recent reports from April 22, 2024, shed light on developments at the Thai-Myanmar border in Mae Sot District, Tak Province. Some Burmese individuals have opted to return to their homeland, seizing a temporary lull in the fighting across the Myawaddy border. Utilizing Pier 18, a transit point for goods transportation to Myawaddy, these returnees signify a tentative step towards normalcy amidst the prevailing unrest. The trend is poised to continue should the security situation exhibit signs of improvement, with more Myanmar nationals contemplating repatriation in the days ahead.
