BMA Probes Official in Multi-Million Baht Bribery Case

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has initiated a disciplinary investigation into a Public Works Department official following an arrest by anti-corruption police and the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission on May 21, 2024. The official, identified as “Peempong,” is implicated in a bribery case involving several other suspects.

During a raid on Peempong’s residence in Nonthaburi province, authorities discovered a Mercedes Benz, a Toyota, five Harley Davidson motorcycles, and ten pawn shop tickets valued at approximately three million baht. An examination of Peempong’s bank accounts revealed assets totaling around 79 million baht.

Peempong and three accomplices are accused of soliciting a nine million baht bribe from the owner of a golf course in Bangkok’s Suwinthawong area. They allegedly promised to alter the design of a road construction project that purportedly would cut through the golf course, connecting Suwinthawong with Liab Waree roads. The suspects proposed constructing a tunnel under the golf course to avoid disrupting it.

The alleged scheme began in 2018, but the golf course owner discovered last year that there was no such road project. This revelation led the owner to file a complaint with the anti-corruption police, triggering an investigation that culminated in the arrests of Peempong and the other suspects on May 21.

Officials and other involved parties will continue to monitor the investigation closely to ensure all responsible individuals are held accountable.
