Thailand Unveils Strategy to Boost Tourism in 55 Provinces

Thailand’s Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Srettha Thavisin, has convened a strategic meeting aimed at bolstering tourism across 55 second-tier provinces as part of the government’s “Ignite Thailand” vision. This initiative, designed to transform Thailand into a global tourism hub, focuses on enhancing infrastructure and promoting unique local experiences.

The recent meeting included provincial governors, executives from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), and representatives from related private bodies. Prime Minister Srettha laid out a comprehensive strategy to boost the Thai economy in the latter half of 2024. Key officials present were Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit, Tourism and Sports Minister Sermsak Pongpanit, and Secretary General to the Prime Minister Prommin Lertsuridej.

The government’s strategy, known as IGNITE TOURISM THAILAND, aims to enhance connectivity between major and must-visit cities, improve infrastructure, and promote unique local experiences through the “5 Must Do It in Thailand” campaign. This campaign highlights local cuisine, cultural sights, unique destinations, local crafts, and activities that boost physical and mental health.

Prime Minister Srettha emphasized the importance of cooperation between the public and private sectors to develop and enhance the capabilities of these 55 provinces. Key policies include upgrading travel infrastructure, increasing the availability of direct flights, promoting partnerships across the tourism sector, and more intensive marketing of lesser-known destinations tailored to specific traveler groups using digital platforms.

The initiative also prioritizes sustainable tourism, encouraging the development of eco-friendly projects and community involvement in managing tourist attractions. Safety enhancements at tourist sites and the development of new attractions were also discussed to ensure diverse and secure experiences for visitors.

The 55 second-tier tourist provinces are:

  • North (16 provinces): Chiang Rai, Kamphaeng Phet, Lampang, Lamphun, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Nakhon Sawan, Phayao, Phetchabun, Phichit, Phitsanulok, Phrae, Sukhothai, Tak, Uthai Thani, and Uttaradit;
  • Northeast (18 provinces): Amnat Charoen, Bueng Kan, Buri Ram, Chaiyaphum, Kalasin, Loei, Maha Sarakham, Mudahan, Nakhon Phanom, Nong Bua Lamphu, Nong Khai, Roi Et, Sakon Nakhon, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, and Yasothon;

In addition to the infrastructure upgrades and promotional campaigns, the government plans to nominate some provinces for UNESCO World Heritage status, further enhancing their global appeal. This nomination process is part of a broader effort to draw international attention and foster a deeper appreciation for Thailand’s cultural and natural heritage.

Overall, the meeting underscored the government’s commitment to making Thailand a premier tourist destination, with a focus on sustainable and responsible tourism, improved safety standards, and maximized use of digital and social media for publicity. Prime Minister Srettha expressed confidence that these collaborative efforts would lead to sustained growth and prosperity in Thailand’s tourism sector, acknowledging the dedication of all agencies involved in this national campaign.
