Thailand Delays Launch of New Automated Entry System for Tourists

Thailand has delayed the introduction of its highly anticipated automated entry system for foreign tourists. Initially planned for a December 2024 launch, the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system now faces an indefinite postponement due to ongoing coordination efforts between relevant government agencies.

The ETA system, once operational, will allow tourists from 93 visa-exempt countries to register online before arrival. Upon registration, travelers will receive a QR code, which will grant them access to automated immigration gates, simplifying the entry process. This initiative is part of Thailand’s broader goal of moving towards a fully electronic visa system.

Despite the setback, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its commitment to the project. It is actively working with other government agencies to finalise the details and ensure that the system functions efficiently upon its eventual launch. The Ministry assured that it is focused on ironing out the remaining issues, but no new timeline has been provided for when the system will be ready.

The delay coincides with Thailand’s ongoing efforts to revive its tourism sector, which was severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Tourism is a key contributor to the country’s economy, and streamlining immigration processes is seen as essential to attracting more visitors and boosting tourism revenue. According to a report by The Nation, the ETA system is considered a critical tool in these efforts.

In the meantime, tourists planning to visit Thailand are advised to stay updated on the status of the ETA system by monitoring announcements from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Immigration Bureau. These agencies will release information regarding the new launch date and any interim procedures that might be implemented.

While the launch of Thailand’s ETA system is delayed, its role in facilitating smoother entry for foreign visitors remains a priority for the government. The system is expected to significantly improve the travel experience for millions of international tourists once operational.
