Thailand transitions to online eVisa applications at consulates

Thailand is transitioning several of its consulates in Southeast Asia to an online eVisa system, with walk-in applications set to be discontinued as of 8 October 2024. This change impacts key consulates across Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia, which will no longer accept in-person visa applications.

Starting from this date, consulates in Vietnam (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kota Bharu), and Cambodia (Phnom Penh) will move exclusively to eVisa processing. Some of these locations have already ceased consular services ahead of the switch, temporarily closing their doors until the eVisa system goes live.

For those needing to visit a Thai consulate in person, other consulates remain operational, albeit with different requirements. Consulates in Laos (Vientiane, Savannakhet) and Myanmar (Yangon) still allow walk-up applications but require online appointment bookings in advance to gain entry. Meanwhile, consulates in Indonesia (Jakarta), Taiwan (Taipei), and the Philippines (Manila) continue to accept walk-ins without the need for an appointment.

Applicants using the eVisa system must be physically present in the country where the Thai consulate is located. This new system also brings significant changes for those seeking long-term visas. Consulates that previously issued one-year, multiple-entry Non-Immigrant O visas will no longer offer them, as this option is not available through the eVisa process. For individuals looking to apply for a one-year, multi-entry Non-O visa based on marriage, Savannakhet (Laos) and Yangon (Myanmar) remain viable options.
