Engineers Urge Stricter Safety Measures After Deadly Rama II Construction Collapse

The Thailand Structural Engineers Association (TSEA) has criticized the government for failing to enforce safety regulations following a fatal construction accident on Rama II Road. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, resulted in the deaths of six workers when a beam collapsed at a construction site.

TSEA President Amorn Pimanmas stated on Monday that repeated safety lapses along Rama II Road stem from non-compliance with regulations. He warned that without stricter oversight, both workers and the public remain at risk. According to Amorn, construction projects involving complex engineering must adhere to rigorous safety protocols, and cost-cutting measures should never compromise worker safety.

The association is calling for a government review of construction site regulations, including stricter oversight of material durability and contractor qualifications. It also recommends mandating regular safety training and establishing independent inspection teams to ensure compliance. Amorn further stressed the need for clear rules governing subcontractors, as many operate without sufficient expertise, increasing the risk of structural failures.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra convened a special meeting on Monday with relevant state agencies to address ongoing safety concerns on Rama II Road. The Expressway Authority of Thailand (Exat) has since diverted traffic and is working to clear debris, with plans to fully reopen inbound lanes within a week. Outbound access is expected to take about a month due to structural damage.
