Thailand Faces Dangerous Heat Index, Public Urged to Take Precautions

As temperatures continue to rise across Thailand, health authorities have issued warnings for the public to stay out of direct sunlight and stay hydrated. The heat index, which factors in both temperature and humidity, has reached levels deemed hazardous to health, prompting concerns over heat-related illnesses.

According to data from March 5-14, temperatures in various regions ranged from 42 to 51.9 degrees Celsius, placing them in the “dangerous to health” category. Affected areas include the southern, central, eastern, and northeastern regions, a senior health official reported.

Thiti Sawangtham, deputy director-general of the Department of Health, advised people to check weather forecasts regularly and limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours. He also emphasized the importance of drinking sufficient water to prevent dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

Heat-related conditions such as heat rash, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke could have severe consequences, including fatalities, Dr. Thiti warned. High-risk groups include the elderly, individuals with obesity, outdoor laborers, and those with pre-existing health conditions, including mental health disorders. Alcohol consumption could also increase vulnerability to extreme temperatures, he added.

The Meteorological Department reported that on Monday, temperatures peaked between 38 and 39 degrees Celsius in 10 northern provinces. However, a temporary drop in temperature was expected in the upper regions of the country through Saturday due to a cold air mass affecting the northeast. Despite strong winds and limited rainfall, temperatures were forecast to rise again from March 23-28, with summer storms anticipated between March 29 and early next month.

While this summer is not expected to surpass last year’s record-breaking temperatures, authorities continue to monitor conditions closely. Officials urge residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from extreme heat.
