Thailand Deploys Military Aid to Myanmar Following Devastating Earthquake

Thailand has sent military personnel and humanitarian supplies to Myanmar to assist with relief efforts after an 8.2-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on March 28. The mission, led by the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters, aims to provide emergency support in the worst-hit regions, including Mandalay, Naypyidaw, and Yangon.

A 55-member team, divided into specialized units, has been deployed to carry out search and rescue operations, provide medical aid, assess structural damage, and evacuate Thai nationals. The operation is being conducted under the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) framework, with Colonel Khajornsak Phulpothong appointed to oversee the mission.

Three Royal Thai Air Force flights are scheduled between March 30 and April 5 to transport and rotate personnel. Upon arrival, teams will begin immediate operations, including urban search and rescue efforts, establishing field medical units, and evaluating infrastructure damage to aid in long-term recovery planning.

Thai authorities have also implemented evacuation protocols for Thai citizens residing in the affected areas, ensuring safe repatriation for those who request it. Daily video briefings are planned to monitor progress and coordinate logistics between command centers in Thailand and teams on the ground in Myanmar.

Meanwhile, domestic disaster response efforts continue, with Thai officials addressing the aftermath of tremors felt in Bangkok and surrounding provinces. Rescue operations remain underway, including efforts at the collapsed State Audit Office building in the capital.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Phumtham Wechayachai presided over the deployment ceremony in Bangkok on March 30, emphasizing Thailand’s commitment to regional humanitarian support.
