Thailand has joined the international community in mourning the death of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88. His death marks the end of a papacy widely noted for its emphasis on compassion, peace, and interfaith dialogue.
The Thai government, led by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, conveyed its condolences following the announcement. In an official statement, the Prime Minister expressed deep sorrow at the passing of the pontiff, highlighting his influence on global efforts toward understanding and unity.
Pope Francis made a significant visit to Thailand from November 20 to 23, 2019. During the trip, he met with the Supreme Patriarch at Wat Ratchabophit Sathit Maha Simaram Temple and was granted a private audience with His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn. The visit was part of the Vatican’s broader initiative to strengthen ties with Buddhist communities and promote interreligious harmony.
In a message shared on social media, Prime Minister Paetongtarn described the late pope as “a true beacon of humanity,” citing his moral courage, humility, and dedication to peace as qualities that resonated with people around the world, regardless of religious belief.
