Thai, Cambodian Army Chiefs Meet Over Border Tensions

In the aftermath of a recent border clash, senior military leaders from Thailand and Cambodia convened on May 29 in an effort to defuse tensions along their shared frontier. The meeting, held in the border town of Chong Chom, Kap Choeng District in Surin Province, came one day after a skirmish broke out at approximately 5:45 a.m. on May 28 in Chong Bok, located in Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani Province.

Troops from both nations remain positioned near the contested site within an area subject to ongoing territorial disputes. Military officials are working to prevent further escalation in the zone, which has long been a point of friction.

Central to the discussions was the examination of aerial imagery to assess whether Cambodian forces had constructed defensive trenches beyond the demarcated area. If confirmed, such activity could be considered a breach of the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries, potentially infringing upon territory claimed by Thailand.

The dialogue is part of broader efforts to maintain regional stability and avoid a repeat of previous military confrontations. Senior Thai Army commander Gen. Pana Klaewplodthuk led the Thai delegation, while Cambodian Army commander Gen. Mao Sophan represented Phnom Penh in the bilateral talks.
