Thai zoo marks Moo Deng’s first birthday with family event

On July 10, 2025, Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi Province celebrated the first birthday of Moo Deng, a young pygmy hippopotamus who has gained global attention for her playful demeanor and viral appeal. The event featured the launch of Cook for Moo Deng, an interactive program designed to bring visitors closer to animal care routines.

Moo Deng, whose name means bouncy pork in Thai, was born at the zoo and has since become one of its most popular residents. Her energetic behavior, including regular swims and a fondness for watermelon, has endeared her to fans both locally and internationally. Her journey was highlighted by The Pattaya News and Thaiger, both of which credited her popularity to her early viral videos showing her first steps and bath-time play.

As part of the birthday celebrations, the zoo is inviting two families each day between July 3 and July 31 to take part in preparing Moo Deng’s meals alongside zookeepers. The program, which begins at 8:30 a.m., aims to educate participants on animal nutrition and foster greater understanding of zoo operations.

Zoo officials say the initiative also underscores their commitment to the care and conservation of endangered species. Native to West Africa, pygmy hippos face threats from habitat loss and poaching. Moo Deng’s story, amplified by social media, has helped raise awareness and attracted attention from supporters in countries such as Japan and Germany.

In addition to the program, the zoo community expressed hope that Moo Deng’s second year will continue to inspire interest in wildlife preservation. Her visibility has not only brought joy to visitors but also served as a platform for education and conservation efforts.
