Taxi Association Seeks Fare Hike at Mo Chit 2

The Professional Association of Public Taxi Motorists has submitted a formal request to the Transport Ministry, seeking approval to raise the starting fare rate at Mo Chit 2 to 50 baht. This move comes amidst ongoing challenges posed by illegal taxis operating in the area.

Khanesuan Gamkhluntod, the president of the association, highlighted the persistent issue of “mafia” taxis at Mo Chit 2, which has plagued both legally registered taxis and passengers for decades. Despite various policy interventions, the problem remains unresolved, leading to an influx of non-registered taxis and private vehicles offering illegal services.

According to Mr. Khanesuan, these unauthorized taxis and vehicles often charge fares exceeding the legal limit, exacerbating the difficulties faced by legitimate taxi drivers. To address this issue and improve service efficiency, the association conducted a survey involving 1,000 passengers from March 1 to 13. The survey aimed to gauge public opinion on the proposed fare increase, which seeks to incentivize more taxi drivers to operate at the bus terminal, thereby reducing passengers’ waiting times.

In light of the ongoing challenges posed by illegal taxi operations, the association’s petition underscores the urgent need for regulatory measures to ensure fair competition and enhance passenger safety and convenience at Mo Chit 2.
