Bangkok Launches Pavement Refurbishment Initiative Amid Urban Revitalization

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has embarked on a pioneering endeavor aimed at revamping the city’s pavements, spanning a total length of 86 kilometers across 16 thoroughfares. Commencing with Rama IV Road, stretching from the historic Hua Lamphong train station to Kasemrat Road, this initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing urban infrastructure in the bustling metropolis.

Divided into two distinct segments, the refurbishment effort has already made substantial progress. The initial phase, spanning 2.3 kilometers from Hua Lamphong to Lumphini Park’s gate No.3, stands at 40% completion, while the subsequent 2.7-kilometer stretch has reached a commendable 57% progress.

Addressing persistent grievances regarding the deteriorating condition of Bangkok’s pavements, Governor Chadchart Sittipunt underscored the necessity for a comprehensive overhaul, especially considering the vast expanse of approximately 6,000 kilometers of pavement within the city limits.

Governor Chadchart emphasized that the renovation project adheres rigorously to international standards for pavement construction. Key modifications include a reduction in curb concrete edging from 18.5 cm to 10 cm and the implementation of fortified concrete for surface paving to augment longevity. Additionally, alternatives such as asphalt concrete are under consideration, boasting a robust composition with a concrete thickness of 10 cm and steel reinforcement measuring 6 millimeters.

Furthermore, the project encompasses several supplementary features aimed at improving accessibility and usability. These enhancements include the installation of smooth ramps at building entrances, provision of braille blocks to aid the visually impaired, and the use of porous asphalt surrounding trees to expand pedestrian walkways.

With the BMA’s concerted efforts and adherence to international standards, the pavement refurbishment project not only promises to elevate the quality of urban infrastructure but also aims to foster a more inclusive and pedestrian-friendly environment throughout Bangkok.
