Their Majesties The King and Queen Compete in Gulf Sailing Race

In a majestic display of tradition and sporting prowess, His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn, accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Suthida, participated in a sailboat race across the Gulf of Thailand on April 19th. The event, which took place at Chao Samran Beach in Phetchaburi Province, saw the royal couple navigate their way from Cha-am District in Phetchaburi to Ao Teya Ngam in Sattahip District, Chonburi, covering a distance of 45 nautical miles.

The royal participation in the sailing competition was part of the celebrations for the auspicious occasion of His Majesty the King’s 6th cycle, 28th July birthday anniversary, known as “Chakri Memorial Day.” Her Majesty the Queen joined in the sailing competition from Cha-am Beach to Ao Teya Ngam, while His Majesty listened to a briefing on the sailing competition route and techniques at Casa Mar Restaurant before proceeding to Chao Samran Beach to board the RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat). From there, the royal couple transferred to the TP52 sailboat model IRC Zero, designated as THA72, to oversee the race. Their roles included steering the boat and adjusting the sails as necessary.

A total of eight teams from various countries, including Australia, England, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Thailand, and Taiwan, with approximately 115 participants, competed in the Gulf-crossing sailboat race. Notably, Her Majesty the Queen holds motorboat and sailboat licenses from Switzerland and a Coastal Skipper certification from Italy.

Following the race, His Majesty the King proceeded to Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, to visit the Royal Thai Navy Camp and board the royal ship H.T.M.S. Bhumibol Adulyadej, which had previously undergone a naming ceremony on October 16, 2019. This commemorative event marked the King’s involvement in promoting the sport of sailing and honoring the legacy of his father, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

In a poignant tribute to historical significance, the sailing race on April 19th also marked the 58th anniversary of a notable journey undertaken by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej on the “Vega” sailboat. Departing from Klai Kangwon Palace in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, three vessels, including those of Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti, Princess Bajrakitiyabha, and Admiral Sonpong Nilasuk, crossed the Gulf of Thailand to Nawiak Yothin Bay, covering a distance of 60 nautical miles. This historic voyage, completed in 17 hours, was a testament to the King’s enduring dedication to maritime activities and resilience, inspiring reverence from the Thai populace.
