Former Deputy PM Criticizes Senators’ Overseas Study Plans

Former deputy prime minister Plodprasop Suraswadi has voiced his criticism against a significant number of senators who are scheduled to embark on overseas study trips prior to the conclusion of their terms in office, urging them to reconsider their plans “for the sake of their dignity.”

In a recent Facebook post, Plodprasop highlighted the slated European study tours by several Senate committees, whose terms are set to conclude on May 10th. These trips have drawn substantial public backlash due to the projected expenditure of 81 million baht of taxpayers’ money.

The Senate committees, justifying their excursions, assert that the hiatus from international travel during the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in accumulated funds earmarked for overseas ventures. They argue that the present moment presents an opportune time to undertake these trips, citing the acquisition of knowledge beneficial for future generations.

Plodprasop expressed dismay at the hypocrisy exhibited by some of these senators, noting their past criticism of officials planning similar trips as wasteful expenditures. He pointed out the irony of retired senior police and military officers, known for their commendable service records, partaking in such ventures.

Addressing the senators directly, Plodprasop implored them to reconsider their travel plans in light of their established honor and integrity, accumulated over years of public service. He urged them not to tarnish their reputation by indulging in what he deemed wasteful expenditure.

When questioned by reporters regarding the matter, the president of the parliament and House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha deflected, stating that the issue falls within the purview of the Senate and is the responsibility of the Senate Speaker.
