Move Forward Denies Coalition with Pheu Thai

On June 5, 2024, Move Forward party leader Chaithawat Tulathon dismissed speculation that his party may join Pheu Thai in forming a new government if Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is found guilty by the Constitutional Court of gross ethical misconduct. The potential misconduct stems from his appointment of the convicted Phichit Chuenban as PM Office minister.

Tulathon emphasized that the Move Forward party is focused on a long-term political future and does not seek short-term gains. He added that, under the current political climate, even the formation of a new government would struggle to operate effectively. He also noted that Pheu Thai has never approached his party regarding a coalition.

Prime Minister Srettha is scheduled to submit his rebuttal statement to the Constitutional Court on Monday. This is in response to a petition by about 40 senators seeking his removal from office over Phichit’s appointment.

Following the May 14, 2023 election, the Pheu Thai and Move Forward parties, along with a few smaller parties, initially signed a deal to form a coalition government. However, this coalition collapsed when then Move Forward party leader Pita Limjaroenrat failed to secure enough parliamentary support for his nomination as prime minister.
