Royal Thai Navy Prepares for October Barge Procession

The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) hosted a ceremonial blessing for the first 14 vessels set to participate in the royal barge procession this October. The event, led by Navy Chief Admiral Adung Phan-iam, was held at the National Museum of Royal Barges in Bangkok Noi district. The ceremony included blessings for notable royal barges such as Suphannahong, Narai Song Suban, and Anantanagaraj.

These three prominent barges, along with six escort vessels, will be moved to the RTN’s Thonburi Naval Dockyard in preparation for their launch into the Chao Phraya River on July 4. This launch is a prelude to the royal krathin ceremony scheduled for October 27, which commemorates His Majesty the King’s 72nd birthday anniversary on July 28.

In preparation for the grand event in October, the RTN has restored all 52 barges that will participate in the procession. Approximately 2,000 oarsmen have been trained, with rehearsals starting on August 1 and continuing on a weekly basis. Full dress rehearsals, featuring traditional oarsman uniforms, are slated for October 15 and 22.

Admiral Adung highlighted the extensive preparations underway, emphasizing the Navy’s dedication to preserving and celebrating Thailand’s rich maritime heritage. The meticulous efforts underscore the importance of this historical event, which showcases the nation’s cultural pride and royal traditions.

The royal barge procession, a significant ceremonial event, draws attention from both locals and international visitors. As the Navy continues its preparations, the event promises to be a spectacular display of Thailand’s maritime traditions and royal ceremonies.
