Thailand’s Department of Land Transport (DLT) has launched a new mobile application designed to enhance convenience for motorists by eliminating the need to carry a physical driver’s licence. The QR Licence app allows drivers to present their digital licence on electronic devices, including smartphones and tablets.
DLT Director-General Seksom Akraphand explained that the app is user-friendly and includes various features aimed at improving road safety and streamlining administrative tasks. Aside from displaying the digital version of a driver’s licence, the app provides access to important personal information such as blood type and drug allergy history. Additionally, it notifies users when their licence is approaching expiration, helping to prevent unintentional lapses.
A standout feature of the app is its ability to enhance travel safety. Motorists can share their travel routes, current location, and vehicle registration number with others, adding a layer of security for both the driver and their loved ones. In case of emergencies, the app allows for swift communication, enabling users to send distress messages via phone or SMS.
Moreover, the app provides users with the latest updates and news directly from the DLT, ensuring that drivers remain informed about any regulatory changes or important announcements. Available on both Android and iOS platforms, the app can be downloaded from official stores such as Google Play and the App Store.
However, to utilize the app, drivers must have a modern version of their physical driver’s licence—one that features a QR code on the back. This requirement ensures compatibility with the app’s scanning system, which integrates the licence information into the digital format.
The DLT’s new app is part of broader efforts to modernize Thailand’s transport systems, offering drivers greater flexibility and security in managing their essential documents while on the road. As more motorists adopt the digital licence, the DLT anticipates improved efficiency in monitoring road safety and compliance, providing benefits for drivers and regulators alike.
