Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is set to make a major comeback in the political arena with his upcoming public appearance in Udon Thani next week. This marks Thaksin’s first appearance since he ended his self-imposed exile in August 2024. At 74, Thaksin aims to rally support for the Pheu Thai Party ahead of the Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO) mayoral elections scheduled for February 2025.
Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit, a key figure in Pheu Thai, has expressed confidence that Thaksin’s involvement will inject new energy into the campaign. “I believe Thaksin’s role will be a morale booster for the party and the electorate,” Suriya stated, highlighting Thaksin’s political influence and expertise accumulated during his previous terms in office. However, Suriya clarified that Thaksin will not overshadow the campaign but serve as a valuable assistant to the party’s efforts.
Udon Thani, an important stronghold for Pheu Thai and often referred to as the unofficial capital of Thailand’s northeast, was chosen as the location for Thaksin’s highly anticipated return. His public appearance on November 13 and 14 aims to invigorate grassroots support and energize local enthusiasm for the party as it prepares for the upcoming elections.
As candidate applications open in December, Pheu Thai is focused on securing critical seats in key regions, and Thaksin’s high-profile return provides a significant boost to the party’s election strategy. His appearance in Udon Thani will not only energize the party’s base but also strengthen its position in the run-up to the elections.
Thaksin’s re-engagement with public life began earlier this year when he visited his hometown of Chiang Mai in March with his daughter, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. The visit was met with a warm welcome from prominent figures, reaffirming his enduring relevance in Thailand’s political landscape.
