Thailand Unveils National Strategy on Drug Abuse Day

On June 26, Thailand announced a reinforced national strategy to combat drug abuse and trafficking, aligning with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The approach focuses on tightening border control and expanding rehabilitation programs, reflecting the government’s recognition of drug issues as a significant threat to national security.

Thailand has introduced a new drug prevention strategy, marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with a renewed commitment to address the country’s ongoing narcotics challenges. The government’s approach emphasizes two main pillars: border control to disrupt smuggling routes and comprehensive rehabilitation services for drug users.

As part of the policy, officials will enhance surveillance and enforcement measures across 52 border districts. These areas will see stricter inspections at border checkpoints to prevent the flow of illegal substances and other cross-border crimes. Early signs of success have been noted through increased methamphetamine prices on the street, which authorities interpret as a sign of disrupted supply chains.

The plan also promotes support for individuals recovering from addiction, with resources allocated for treatment and reintegration into society. Prevention efforts will target younger populations, with public education campaigns aiming to raise awareness of the consequences of drug use. Local governments and families are expected to play a key role in sustaining these initiatives.

The national campaign, titled Stop Drugs, Start Power, calls on citizens to contribute to building a drug-free society. In a ceremony commemorating the day, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra reiterated that addressing narcotics is a top government priority. A number of cabinet members, security officials, and local administrators were present at the event.
