An effort to increase food safety in Bangkok while reducing food waste has been launched with the participation of the 50 district offices in the city. These branches will receive surplus food from participating agencies and redistribute it to the needy.
The Bangkok Food Bank strategy is led by the Bang Khun Thien District Office of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), with the aim of enhancing the safety of food for Bangkokians and redistributing resources to the needy more efficiently.
During the implementation of the first phase of the policy, district offices will play a key role in receiving food deliveries and redistributing them accordingly. Later, the private sector and consumers will be able to send food directly to the beneficiaries.
The Bangkok Food Bank is an initiative born of cooperation between the BMA, the private sector, civil society and associations that are already doing similar work. Surplus food and raw materials from facilities such as hotels, shopping malls, markets, grocery stores and food centers will be redistributed to those in need, including the most vulnerable, the urban poor and those affected by disasters or crisis situations.
The BMA will work with partner organizations such as the Sustenance Foundation (SOS) to operate the BKK Food Bank.
At the same time, suggestions from partners will be used to adjust the operation of the Bangkok Food Bank so that the 50 district offices can coordinate their actions.
