The BMTA intends to purchase 3,200 electric buses

The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) has said that it plans to purchase 3,200 electric buses over the next three years to replace its fleet of fossil-fuel-powered buses.

The move is part of the BMTA’s updated business recovery strategy, according to Sorapong Paitoonphong, Deputy Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Transport.

In 2020, the BMTA announced plans to acquire 2,800 new buses to replace the old vehicles it presently runs. The company’s fossil-fueled buses will be replaced with a new fleet of electric cars under the revised plan.

Sorapong noted that the transportation administration has not yet determined whether to buy or lease the electric buses, and that the transaction must follow appropriate processes.

The BMTA will also reconsider its proposal to engage a business to repaint 323 NGV buses that will continue to operate for the next five years.

The BMTA’s business strategy should be completed in around 60 days. It will contain information on early retirement for its employees as well as the anticipated employment of drivers and technicians capable of operating and maintaining electric buses.

Meanwhile, businesses with concessions to operate 54 routes in Bangkok and nearby provinces will begin replacing their buses with electric buses this month, according to Sorapong.
