Thai Government Plans Evacuation and Support for Citizens and Students in Sudan Amid Ongoing Violence

In light of the ongoing violence in the area, a gathering was held on April 22, 2023, with the purpose of formulating a plan to assist Thai nationals and students who are currently residing in Sudan. Recently, representatives from multiple agencies got together to talk about the current situation, including the National Security Council, the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPAC), and others.

According to a report from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the current conflict in Sudan is making the situation in Sudan uncertain. They suggested different options for evacuating Thai citizens to safer regions in neighboring countries like Egypt and Djibouti. The military is making preparations to send evacuation aircraft once it is determined which route is the safest.

After returning to Thailand, the SBPAC will assist Thai Muslim students by facilitating the transfer of their academic credits to Thai schools, in addition to providing transportation for them. In addition, communication efforts will be made to inform students, their families, and the general public in Thailand about the current situation.

The SBPAC is currently formulating a plan, which will include the establishment of a coordination center at the local level in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other local government agencies. They will place a primary emphasis on communicating with the families of students enrolled in schools in Sudan and providing the assistance hotline number 1880.

In order to effectively respond to the crisis, the National Security Council highlighted the significance of maintaining open lines of communication and coordinating efforts. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will keep a close eye on the situation and make preparations for any necessary evacuations. In the meantime, task forces will be established with the purpose of communicating with Thai students and fostering confidence in the government’s support for a safe return.

For those students who have decided not to continue their education overseas, the SBPAC will work in coordination with other organizations to ensure a warm welcome upon their return, as well as to meet their accommodation and educational requirements.

The following are the communication channels utilized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs:

096-165-7120, 096-352-0513, and 096-352-9015.
