Addressing concerns over non-operational escalators and elevators in the Red Line commuter rail system, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has commenced repair works. According to Ekarat Sriarayanphong, head of the SRT governor’s office, an inspection identified 47 out of 228 escalators and 22 out of 133 elevators as non-functional.
To expedite the restoration process, repair activities have been divided into three separate contracts. The initial contract prioritizes repairs at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal and Chatuchak stations, slated for completion by June. Subsequent contracts will address eight additional stations, including Wat Samian Nari, Bang Khen, and Don Mueang, with a 90-day turnaround period.
Furthermore, a forthcoming maintenance contract aims to centralize escalator and elevator upkeep across the entire Red Line. This strategic initiative not only seeks to address current issues but also aims to prevent future disruptions by entrusting maintenance responsibilities to a single contractor.
The Red Line, an essential electric commuter rail service managed by the SRT, spans 41.3 kilometers from Taling Chan Station in Bangkok to Rangsit Station in Pathum Thani.
