Thailand’s Digital Wallet ‘Negative List’ Limits Purchases

Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has announced that a total of eighteen products and services have been placed on the digital wallet ‘Negative List,’ restricting their purchase using the 10,000 baht benefit money. The list, which includes items such as lottery tickets, alcoholic drinks, tobacco products, cannabis, kratom, and luxury items like gold and diamonds, aims to ensure the funds are used responsibly. Phumtham emphasized that the list is subject to periodic review, especially to consider essential items crucial for daily life and job creation.

Addressing concerns about the scheme benefiting major businesses, Phumtham clarified that the initiative prioritizes smaller enterprises such as independent retailers, community stores, and cooperative outlets. Excluded from participation are large-scale retail chains and department stores. He further noted that relevant government agencies, including the Commerce Ministry’s Internal Trade and Business Development departments, along with ministries of Interior and Agriculture, are prepared for business registrations.

The scheme is set to involve approximately 146,000 Blue Flag outlets, 5,000 Blue Flag eateries, and around 400,000 eligible retail establishments, including food shops. Registration for both individuals and businesses is scheduled to commence in August, marking a significant step towards distributing economic benefits across local communities.
